Well I have used oscommerce . It is a free download but it will take some programming skill to actually make it usable. This assumes that you have your own server or at least access a domain host that lets you install your own custom software. There are also vendors out there that can supply a "canned" store front for you using the oscommerce software. Look at the forums at the below link , they do contain a lot of info.

It really depends on what kind of items you'll be selling. Some shopping carts are better for digital products, etc.

I would recommend osCommerce if you know the basics of PHP. If you don't, programming the template won't be that easy. The catalog is very easy to use, and many people use it. Therefore, you can visit the community page where they list some tweaks they have developed to creat more features. (http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions). osCommerce also supports many payment modules including PayPal. It's FREE, and you can instantly create a shop if your host has Fantastico.

CubeCart, also a major shopping cart system, is rather easy to use and program. It is also available for instant creation with Fantastico. The forums (http://cubecart.com/site/forums/) has features equivalent to osCommerce's contributions center.

If you don't know much about PHP, but know basics about HTML, PayPal has a shopping cart under their "Merchants" section. It looks pretty basic to use.

Hope it helped!

Go to
http://www.opensourcecms.com/

Choose the e-Commerce folder on the left.

You'll see 4 free shopping carts each with user votes.

The administrator username and password is given for every system and each system is deleted and re-installed every two hours. This allows you to to add and delete content, change the way things look, basically be the admin of any system.

Open Source Commerce is a great store front that I recommend. http://www.oscommerce.com/

Also, you can try Zen Cart. http://www.zencart.com/

Both are open source, and both have plenty of plugins. ZenCart is a derivative of OsCommerce since some programmers that it was getting too big and drachonian. ZenCart had a lot of complaints in the past about too many SQL queries which would bog down the server, but this has been corrected now. Some thing I love about oscommerce is the forums, http://forums.oscommerce.com/ they can answer almost any question, no matter how complicated and the amount of plugins they have.

You should definitely check out web software made by Interspire. They also have demos so you can get a feel for their interface:
